I love old books and nothing makes me sadder than seeing boxes of them in the trash.  Although I know many have outlived their usefulness I just want to take them all home.  So, it’s no wonder that I loved the idea of turning them into planters.  A great way to show off their beautiful spines and highlight some of their pages. Plus, I always appreciate an interesting was to bring some greenery into the house!

MATERIALS

Books

Drill

Jigsaw

Utility knife

Deli cup

For the single planter, trace the widest part of your deli cup onto the cover of your book.

First use a drill (I found a Forstner bit was the easiest) to make a starter hole and then use the jig saw to cut through all the pages following your pencil line.

Trim down your deli cup to the height of the book.

And insert it into your new planter. Easy breezy!

For the stack of books, do the same thing, but you can use a regular size flower pot. Use the drill and saw again to cut all the way through your book.  Then repeat on as many books as you need to to come up to the height of the flower pot.  Stack the books, lining up the holes.  Add your potted plant.  You can then adjust the angle of books or even set your book planter on another stack of books for added drama. For the open book, I outlined my container about 10 pages into the book, this time I used a square plastic container.  Use the utility knife to cut through the pages a few at a time.  Stop when you have a well deep enough to fit your container.  Insert your plants.  I used herbs here since it was a cook book!  And now these books once again have a place in our homes!
