Succulent Heart

Everyone knows my love of succulents.  There’s such a variety, they take very little care and they live forever.  I did a similar project to this before where I mixed them with roses and used floral foam. I wanted to revisit the project and find a way you could permanently plant in the heart box - and I found the secret!

MATERIALS

Small succulent plants

Heart shaped chocolate box

Can of Flex Seal or other waterproofing paint

STEPS

Remove chocolates from box, you won’t need them. (I’ll leave it up to you as the best way to get rid of them.)

Paint the box with the waterproofing.  This is the key for turning the paper box into a plantable item! Don’t skimp on it. Make sure you fully coat it and get the sides and bottom, inside and out.  Let dry for the recommended about if time (usually overnight).

Plant your succulents in the box. Knock off some of the dirt from the bottom and choose low and compact succulents.

Plant them closely and think about the colors and textures.

Here I used the same type of plant around the edges and placed a cluster of lighter plants off center in the middle.

Another great option is to plant the same plant in lines to create strips.

When done, tie with a ribbon and give to them to the one you love. To care for them, place them in a bright place or on an outside table.  Water them infrequently by spraying with a mister until the soil is damp.
