Making Cakestands from Vintage Finds

Hope you caught me making these on Hallmark Channel's Home & Family!  They are one of the easiest, most creative and fun projects I've done on the show.  You get to exercise your second hand shopping skills, your color combinations, and just have fun!  Best of all, it costs almost nothing, so if you don't like what you end up with - you can just start over!Materials:-A collection of dinner plates, salad plates, even soup bowls-Various size and shape candlesticks - make sure they have a flat top and bottom edge-Spray paint-Adhesive. You can use Liquid Nails (super strong, but takes a while to set up) or a glue gun (very quick, not as strong in the long run).  First, start playing around with what you have.  I stacked, and restacked, and restacked again until I got a combination that I really liked.  There is no wrong way to do it, so have fun.  Once you know what you're going to pair with what, spray paint any pieces that you want to color.  I painted a pair of candlesticks bright green to go with the Asain inspired dinner and saucer that I had.  I also painted some white dinnerware blue to give it a little pop. If you want an entire cakestand to be a color, hold off on painting the pieces, it's easier to paint the entire thing when it's finished.Once you've got your paint on, you can start assembling.  As I mentioned above, I used hot glue on some and Liquid Nails on others.  All and all, I liked the glue gun better since it was faster, but you've got to be good at getting the pieces centered quickly since you have almost no time to move things around.  If you're not so good with your aim, then go with the Liquid Nails, you'll have an hour or two to make sure everything is lined up like you want it.Turn your plate upside down, put your adhesive around the top edge of your candlestick, and stick the top of the candlestick to the bottom of the plate. If you're doing a single layer, you're done!  How easy was that.  If you're getting fancy with a double or triple layer, keep going!  Flip your two pieces right side up, apply your adhesive and attach the two pieces.  Voila, a double! Now, if you want to add color to the final piece, have at it!  I chose bubble gum pink for my two tiered piece and love it! Don't feel you have to paint all the pieces however, my favorite is the one I made with a silver candlestick and a silver trimmed dinner plate - no painting needed. I paired my spray painted blue plates with glass candlesticks which I didn't paint - it gives it a very 1940's feel. And I do like the way my combo, paint and unpainted piece came out.  It makes me want to serve dragon fruit and lychee nuts!
