Yarn Wreath

I’ve always loved yarn… all those colors and textures! Let me loose in a fiber store and I’ll come away with bags of yarn with all these potential projects floating around in my head (sadly only about 2% of those projects actually come to fruition.) So I decided, lets skip the actual project and celebrate the yarn! This yarn wreath is easy to make - a little modern, a little old fashioned - the perfect piece of decor for anyone who loves to knit, crochet….or just likes yarn.

MATERIALS

  • Yarn in various thicknesses and textures. I kept mine monochromatic (choosing several shades and tones of the same color), but feel free to mix it up! You’ll also need one contrasting color for the knitted “bow”.

  • Styrofoam balls in various sizes 2”, 2.5” and 3” (approximately 30 in all) and one or two 4” ones

  • Spray paint. If you’re doing a monochromatic version, pick a color darker than your darkest color. If you’re doing a mix of colors, you’ll need paint to match each color.

  • Knitting needles or crochet hook.

  • Flat wreath form. Mine was 16” outside diameter.

  • Scissors.

  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks.

  • Pencil.

STEPS

  • Spray paint balls and wreath form. Stab the balls with the pencil for easier painting. Painting the balls a slightly darker color than the yarn lets you use less yarn - any exposed Styrofoam will look like shadows.

  • Allow to dry.

  • Wrap each Styrofoam ball with yarn.

  • Wrap one ball with the contrasting color yarn.

  • Secure the end with a dab of hot glue.

  • Arrange the yarn balls on the wreath form, starting with larger ones. Note the placement of the larger 4” balls, as that will be where you add your needles or hook. Hot glue in place.

  • Add additional smaller balls on top, varying the position and color placement.

  • Knit or crochet a small piece with the contrasting yarn to act as the “bow”. Mine was approximately 5” x 8”. I think an even longer one could look great, draped in and out of the wreath too!

  • Pierce the needles through the largest ball.

  • Arrange the knitted or crocheted pieces.

  • Glue the contrasting ball close by.

  • Hang and enjoy!
